Skywatch Friday - Horse Memorial

I have been very slack about travelling with my camera lately, but yesterday morning decided to take it with me. On the way home I decided it might be a good idea to fill up with petrol, because my warning light had come on 40 kilometres earlier.
What a stroke of good fortune that I chose the filling station opposite the Horse Memorial........ the rest is history....................

The inscription on the base of the memorial reads:
 THE GREATNESS OF A NATION
 CONSISTS NOT SO MUCH UPON THE NUMBER OF ITS PEOPLE
 OR THE EXTENT OF ITS TERRITORY
 AS IN THE EXTENT AND JUSTICE OF ITS COMPASSION

 ERECTED BY PUBLIC SUBSCRIPTION
 IN RECOGNITION OF THE SERVICES OF THE GALLANT ANIMALS
 WHICH PERISHED IN THE ANGLO BOER WAR 1899-1902

I have read that about 300,000 horses died in that war.

  4. What a wonderful photo. Wouldn't you have hated it if you hadn't had your camera? Better carry it at all times -- you're too talented to miss these opportunities.

  24. Hi;
    Found you through skywatch and I love your photography. (Had a good giggle at the pig pic.) As a horse owner, and horse lover I was very touched by this skywatch photo. My two horses are the most amazing, loyal friends.
