What a stroke of good fortune that I chose the filling station opposite the Horse Memorial........ the rest is history....................
The inscription on the base of the memorial reads:
THE GREATNESS OF A NATIONCONSISTS NOT SO MUCH UPON THE NUMBER OF ITS PEOPLE
OR THE EXTENT OF ITS TERRITORY
AS IN THE EXTENT AND JUSTICE OF ITS COMPASSION
ERECTED BY PUBLIC SUBSCRIPTION
IN RECOGNITION OF THE SERVICES OF THE GALLANT ANIMALS
WHICH PERISHED IN THE ANGLO BOER WAR 1899-1902
I have read that about 300,000 horses died in that war.
