The Karoo between and Laingsburg and Ladismith in the Western Cape is is a particularly rugged and beautiful part of the country. When we travelled that route the sky was filled with cotton wool clouds and the karoo bush was a blaze of yellow.

Clubfoot Notes - Providing encouragement

When I first leant that my third grandchild would be born with clubfoot I did not know what to expect, or what the prognosis was, or how it would be treated. That was one time when I was quick to hit the search buttons on Google, to find out more on the subject. The first thing to emerge is that there is hope and that with proper treatment a child born with clubfoot can live a normal life.

In Jonathan's case his feet were corrected though the use of the Ponseti Method, where through stretching, manipulation and serial plaster casts the foot is repositioned. When you see him running about now, like any other child, it is hard to believe he started out life with clubfoot.

My intention is not to write about the experience, but rather to publicise a site, Clubfoot Notes, which my my daughter created to give hope and encouragement to parents with a child born with clubfoot. The site is written from the perspective of a mother and is not only full of facts, but provides links to useful resources and chronicles Jonathan's treatment.

Jonathan is a delightful and very fastidious little fellow. Here he is busy cleaning the "mud" from his toes on the beach. And as you can seen his feet are quite normal

Taxi art - Route 67

I have decided to keep with the Route 67 theme, with this fleet of mini bus taxis coming up Whites Road opposite the opera house.

In keeping with reality these taxis come complete with scratches and dents.

This is one of the new sculptures along Route 67 in Port Elizabeth, but I am not sure what it is called or what it represents. If I have to venture a guess, the loops represent the voting line and propellers the crosses on ballot papers from the 1994 elections. I'll have to check this out.

Anyway it is one of 67 Public Art Works commissioned to symbolise Nelson Mandela’s 67 years of work dedicated to the Freedom of South Africa.

Rhino Hunting Auction Travesty

A simple message, "I have something to tell you..." on you tube has really opened a can of worms on the subject of the onging slaughter of our country's rhino.

I find it unbelievable that that at a time when our rhino population is under threat, from poaching that Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife is allowing an anonymous KwaZulu-Natal businessman, the right to hunt and kill a white rhino for the princely sum of R960,000.

One of their spokesmen claims that this forms part of ongoing plans to control the number of white rhinos. Who do they think they are fooling. The rhinos can be relocated to any number of reserves around the country. It is estimated that 443 rhinos were poached in 2011, so there are many areas where the population can be replenished. Would it not be better to preserve them, rather than to kill them to satisfy the ego of some rich dude.

Another claim is that the money generated from the auction will be used for conservation. Can anyone explain to me how the killing of any endangered species contributes to conservation. It is no wonder that this action has sparked widespread outrage around the country.

The statement by one of their spokesmen that, “We have not broken any laws as the law fully allows us to have hunts like this,” is also part of the spin. The fact that it may be legal does not make it right.

The fact is that rhinos are endangered and we should be preserving them rather than killing them.

Free State roads are the worst

Having just travelled 4,193 kilometres through seven of the nine provinces,the award for the worst roads in the country must, without any doubt be givento the Free State. Their tar roads make travelling on the dirt roads in theNorthern Cape a breeze.

The term "pot holes" is something of a misnomer though. TheAfrikaans term, "slag gate" is more appropriate - it literallytranslates into "slaughter holes." These potholes have the potentialto destroy tyres and suspensions, so you have to exercise special care whendriving along their roads, or be prepared to fork out a fortune in repairbills.

I do not have any pictures of the potholes, but this series from one of thedeviations between Wepener and Lady Brand paints a pretty good, or should Irather say bad picture of what to expect.

While it is encouraging that the roads are being repaired, do not expect their contractors to spare you when you reach a deviation. I am sure that there must be a bunch of bureaucrats sitting in an office somewhere, taking bets on how many suspensions and tyres are likely to be destroyed on their roads.

To compound the problem I find that many of the Free State drivers show very little patience on the road and I get the distinct impression that they are generally in a BIG hurry to reach their destinations.

Even the light weights head for the verge and all its "boulders" to overtake.

I had the camera ready just in case the truck went over, but it managed to get past unscathed.

And the trucks just kept on coming...........

So, if you are planning to travel through the South Eastern part of the FreeState, be warned you are in for a rough ride.

The final word is, how do our authorities get away with letting the roads fallinto such a poor state of repair?

The Max Files has been in the doldrums for the past few weeks, but that was because Sue and I went on a tour around the country.

The idea of the trip started with an invite to my nephew's wedding at Dullstroom in Mpumalanga, which made us decide that if we are going to travel that far, why not make a holiday of it and come home on a circuitous route via the Great Karoo. This has been something we have wanted to do for a long time - so we grabbed the opportunity.

Big skies and wide open spaces in the Free State

We ended up travelling 4,193 kilometres over 11 days and visited seven of the nine provinces. For much of the time we were in the Northern Cape, enjoying the wide open spaces and rugged beauty of the Karoo. The area is so sparsely populated that there is little or no Internet connection, so there was no real opportunity to do any blogging.

Not being people who like being tied down to schedules, we only booked our first three nights accommodation and from there onwards, it was a matter of going where our whims and the road took us. Luckily Sue and I are both very flexible and made a few impromptu changes along the way and had a fantastic trip.

Urban Prison #3 - Hemming us in

There as a time when I would stroll over to the cliff above Albany Road to enjoy the sunset or to just look at the Bay. Those days are over. This area became a dumping ground for building rubble and garden refuse, it was an escape route for criminals and became a favourite hangout for drunks and druggies......................
The result, rather than tackling the root cause of the problems, the authorities decided to fence off the area and so one of my favourite viewpoints is gone, unless you enjoy looking through the wire.

A few months ago I posted some pictures of me breaking the rules, by taking hand held shots through the windscreen of the car, at night, in pouring rain and actually enjoying the blurred results. Traditional Max likes well composed, sharp pictures and does not like to deviate from what he is comfortable with, but that all changed that night - I now like the challenge of the abstract.

Last night conditions were perfect for my new bent, as it was pouring with rain, so Sue and I went out on a photographic jaunt. There was no room for tripods, so it was a question of cranking up the ISO rating and shooting through the car windows.

Urban Prison - Razor Wire #1

I have started a series of pictures that I call the "Urban Prison" to reflect the changing face of the urban environment. When I was a child security was not an issue. We had no burglar bars on our windows, our doors were never locked, barbed wire was confined to farm fences and CCTV and burglar alarms were concepts for the future. That has all changed.

Today, in many cities, we create barriers around our homes and our businesses to keep the bad elements out and ourselves and our property safe. In so doing create our own "Urban Prison."

The new look ArtEC building has become a symbol of urban renewal in Central, where many of the old buildings have been allowed to fall into decay. The mural was commissioned by the Nelson Mandela Bay Development Agency as part of the Route 67 - the art route that starts at the Campanile and ends at the Nelson Mandela Bay Art Museum. This route will put Port Elizabeth firmly on the map as far as street art goes, but that will be a subject for another day.

I just love the way the colours of the building are enhanced by the blue of the early morning sky.

We have just spent a delightful weekend in the Karoo and come away feeling totally refreshed, but still wanting to spend more time enjoying its vastness, solitude and tranquility. Where we go has no access to cell phones or the internet, but those things aren't even a consideration for us out there. It is a harsh and rugged part of the world, with its own charm and beauty and when it gets into your system it grows on you and you just want to be able to spend more time out there, away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Night shoot

Last night I wandered around Central after the opening of an art exhibition at arTEC taking a few pictures on the way. It was what I call a "hit and run" photography session. With no one to watch my back I set my camera on ISO 1600 and proceeded to shoot away and then move on.

The arTEC building mural has become a must see feature in Central. One day I will photograph it in the day light.

Political expediency vs what is right

Can political expediency ever take precedence over what is right and just?

The failure of the government to grant the Dalai Lama a visa to enter the country, it is a poor indictment on the ruling party, as they have once again ridden rough shod over the democratic values and principles set out in our constitution and in so doing has raised the ire of a large section of population.

And of course they do not like the heat that this has generated, but then if they want to make unpopular decisions they must face the consequences. At this late stage any spin that the goverment places on their decision will have absolutely no credibility.

The Dalai Lama was invited to the country to attend the 80th birthday celebrations of the Archbishop Desmond Tutu, a friend and fellow Nobel Peace Prize winner. Why should that be a problem?

This refusal has understandably sparked a reaction from the Archbishop who was quoted by News24 as saying, " We will pray, as we prayed for downfall of [the] apartheid government, we will pray for [the] downfall of a government that misrepresents us."

"People were opposed to injustice and oppression and people believe that we South Africans would be on the side of those who are oppressed. Tibet is being oppressed.
People who supported us in our struggle... those people are weeping. They are saying South Africa, it can't be. Our government, representing me, says it will not support Tibetans who are being oppressed viciously by the Chinese. May I just remind you - the minister of international relations and co-operation [Maite Nkoana-Mashabane] two years ago said the Dalai Lama can come anytime. She was being very, very, economical with the truth or she didn’t know her work.”

The Archbishop is to be commended for his stand in support of a man of peace whose country has been brutally oppressed.

Life with Suzie - Who comes up with these things

When you live with a colourful and unpredictable person there is only one certainty and that is, always be prepared to expect the unexpected. The problem is that you can never anticipate the unexpected and believe me the unexpected comes in many guises.

So, was I surprised to see Suzie's car sporting a set of eye lashes..........no. That's the sort of thing that will appeal to her sense of fun and of course my reaction to driving her car.

The car also looks happy, but I think I may just have to organise some eye shadow and lipstick to complete the ensemble.

artEC Mural

The artEC (formerly the Eastern Province Society for Arts and Crafts) building, in Bird Street has recently undergone a major facelift, with a mural done by Gabriel Chipondo and Bongani Njalo. The pictures are all of people who line and work in the area.

The building is already becoming a a popular backdrop for photographic shoots.

Little olive drab bird

The bush is so full of these little drab birds that are difficult to identify. Usually they are little grey ones, but this one is slightly brighter than grey, with a beak that appears to be a slightly out of alignment and beady little eyes.

When I am feeling more academic I will consult my field guide. For now I'll just enjoy it for what it is - a little olive drab bird.

The guinea fowl were enjoying a seemingly peaceful morning foraging for food and avoiding jackals that were intent on making one of them a meal .................................

.......................when all of a sudden the peace was shattered by this wild melee as two guinea fowls stated a fight. This gives a new meaning to the term, "flying into" your opponent.

For those who are not familiar with South African colloquialisms, "skop, skiet en donner" can be literally translared to mean "kicking, shooting and beating people up". But it does does lose its impact in the translation. The term is generally used to describe action movies of the more violent kind.

But one thing you must always bear in mind when visiting Addo. If you spend your time just looking at the big grey elephants you may just miss the little grey birds. I still need to identify this little fellow, which will happen one day.

Mini vs Maxi Tour - Bonus

When the team was walking over to the Tsitsikamma Canopy Tours offices, "Chrome & Fin City" caught my eye and I resolved it was a place to a visit after the tour. I would never have expected to find a collection of Cadillacs in Storms River.

Aside from the cars, the Cadillac Shack is decked out with pictures of Elvis and his music plays constantly in the background, a reminder that the the king of rock and roll was partial to "Caddies".

I am not sure which model this one is, but judging from the number plate it dates back to 1959.

The Cadillac Eldorado is big and brash and flashy - no wonder they were so popular. One of these could have made an ideal MAXI team vehicle - I would even have been prepared to drive around in the pink one.

The fins were such a hall mark of the cars of that era. It gives them a sculptured look.

Aint it cool.................. it is a real work of art, but they would probably not fit in the parking bays of today.

Just on the out-skirts of Stutterheim is the Manderson Hotel, a real gem with well appointed rooms and a friendly atmosphere.

My room for the night looked out over the gardens and the Amathole Mountains.

The hotel has magnificent views of the Khologha Forest and the Amathole Mountains. It is an ideal place to stop over if you enjoy hiking and want to tackle some interesting forest walks.

The walks through, the Khologha Forest, start a short distance from the hotel and you can choose the length of you walk depending on you level of fitness and dare I say laziness. The long walk is 17 kilometres. If you don't have a map, you can always check the distances and routes at the interpretive centre.

Just remember to obey the signs if you are picnicing and are going to braai.

The parth are well signposted - don't you like the innovative direction signs.

One of the things that struck me about this wooden walkway, which goes a short distance into the forest, is that it makes it possible for people with disabilities to enjoy the beauty of the forest.

The Mini vs Maxi Challenge - From the West to the East

Day three of the tour dawned bright and sunny in Tsistikamma. It is one of those paces that is full of charm and beauty, which makes it difficult to leave, especially after the wonderful hospitality of our hosts Chris and Irma.

To get the most of the atmosphere I took an early morning walk before breakfast, through the gardens and the picturesque village, which is set below the majestic mountains of the Tsitsikamma. Imagine waking up to this every morning.

A two and a half drive brought us to the Elephant House at Addo, where we were ushered into an establishment that was full character and old world charm, with its wide verandas and lush well kept gardens.

This is a place to stay if you are looking for peace and quite, good accommodation and excellent food. Our gourmet three course lunch with our host that was superb, to say the least.

The Elephant House is a stone's throw away from the Addo Elephant National Park, which was our next destination. As we were driving on to Stutterheim after the tour, we decided to do a self drive in the MAXI teams VW Amarok. This vehicle is amazing. It is just as comfortable on the dirt roads as it is on the tar.

The Addo Elephant National Park is one of my favourite places in the Eastern Cape. Whenever I go there I am never disappointed. This time was no exception. I have never seen the Park looking so lush. The countryside is awash with a blaze of colour from all the flowers - it looks like spring has sprung early this year.

With all the vegetation and surface water the animals were not as concentrated as they were in the drier months, but we were not disappointed - here are three of my favourites, elephants, kudu and warthog.

From here our next stop was the Manderson Hotel at Stutterheim, but that is tomorrow's story.

My announcement that I was going to bungee jump was met with mixed reaction, from total horror, to "I wish it was me." In spite of all my bluster and bravado I was not sure that I would do, or could do it - not that I was about to tell anyone that little secret.
And when I got there, oh boy, oh boy, oh boy I nearly chickened out. Iit was only my pride that kept me going. How does one describe the emotions – trepidation while waiting for your turn,

worry as you are helped to the edge, you can't run away, as your ankles are tied together,

terror as you are launched into the abyss

and then pure joy

the thrill of the jump as you plummet ......... a long, long way down

relief as you are hauled up

and then a grin like the Cheshire cat.

Face Adrenalin really did us proud. Will I do it again? I think I could.

Day two continued.

No visit to Cape St Francis is complete without a visit to the lighthouse.

After breakfast, Frank from the Cape St Francis Resort took us on a cruise around the canals and proved to be a very congenial companion and competent skipper as he regaled us with many facts and stories.

It was then time for the BUNGEE organised by Face adrenalin at the Bloukrans Bridge. It's a loooong way down.

It's almost like there are two worlds that do not know what the other is doing.

Now if that was not enough, we headed for Tsitsikamma Canopy Tours, to zip line between the trees....high above the ground. What does strike you is that jumping off high places is not one of man's natural inclinations. But it is fun.

Our guides, Chris and Tarky (Tarquin) kept us in stitches with their brand of what I call "forest humour." Here we see Lindile coming in for a smooth landing.

Irma and Chris, Tsitsikamma Village Inn, our hosts for the evening have really pulled out the stops. Their hospitality is really tremendous and adds to the warmth of the place.

Dinner at the Hunters Restaurant was superb. I settled on the venison pie and Lindile and Songezo the rump steaks.

It has been a long day. The drive to East London was most enjoyable as I was treated to a magificent sunrise. They are always good for getting the day started.

Inkwenkwezi Private Game Reserve hosted the launch of the Mini vs MAXI tour. It is a great venue and the hosts have a wonderful sense of humour. At lunch we were offered a choice of a mini or maxi burger. I, along with a few others allowed myself to be "conned" into the MAXI burger. How could I have been so blind.

Every Wednesday they have burger night. The deal is that if you can eat two of these in the space of an hour, you will be rewarded with 24 cases of beer.

In twelve years on three people have managed it. I am not surprised. I couldn't manage half.

The Maxi team drove back to Cape St Francis this evening and will be starting with the action tomorrow.

I have never thought of the Eastern Cape as the Adventure Province until now. I have always been content to travel around the province enjoying its beauty, bio-diversity, wildlife and history.

Now that the Eastern Cape Parks and Tourism Agency have given me the opportunity to see at first hand the adventure side of the Eastern Cape and get involved in some of the more physical pursuits, I am sure my travels will never be the same again.

Whatever you do in the Eastern Cape, or wherever you travel, you will always find some wonderful gems. I am looking forward to the experience.

Frack Off - the Karoo is our heritage

The announcement by Susan Shabangu Minister of Mineral Resources this week that the moratorium on shale gas prospecting would remain in place at least until the end of February is welcomed but does not provide much comfort. Until there is a total ban on fracking we can never become complacent or be satisfied.

Many of us are wondering where this road is taking us ........

Mini vs Maxi Tour #4 - let the good times roll

A lot of what is planned for the Mini vs Maxi Tour is still shrouded in secrecy, but this build up is part of the fun. From the information we have been given, I think the adventure may well be confined to the coastal belt and I have listed the sponsors in my sidebar, under the heading - Mini vs Maxi Tours - Meet the Sponsors.

Looking at these sponsors, all I can say, at this stage, is we are in for a lot of fun. Some of the activities we have been told of are learning to shoot a rifle, elephant walk, interaction with cheetahs, tree top canopy tour, bungy jump, game drive on a quad bike and canoes.

Some of these will be new experiences for me and so far I have committed myself to the bungy jump. All I can say is, "Ho hum, what was I thinking, but there is no backing out now."

Mini vs Maxi Tour - The Eastern Cape has it all

When I was looking at the plans for the Mini vs Maxi tour I was again reminded that the Eastern Cape is a really amazing tourist destination, but that is not always recognised as such.

Sue and I recently joined Couch Surfers and have had some fantastic people come and stay with us, but it always seems that they are just passing through. When I ask them if they are planning a trip to the Addo Elephant Park, they look at me blankly and say, "No, we are going to Kruger. I am sure we will see elephants there."

"Yes you will, but we have the big seven here," I say.

They also don't seem to realise that our elephant cows are much prettier, because they do not have their delicate facial features spoilt by large tusks.

And then, can you see whales and dolphins and sharks in Kruger?

We have the Wild Coast, the Sunshine Coast and the Garden Route.
We have lush green forests with amazing yellow woods and the wide open spaces of the Karoo. There are mountains and valleys and rivers, lakes and dams.

We have the most amazing fynbos and aloes. In fact there is always something flowering in the Eastern Cape, no matter what time of the year.

You can ski in the snow in winter and on the lakes and rivers in summer.

We have everything in the Eastern Cape and next week the Mini and Maxi teams will be experiencing the "adventure" activities the province has to offer. There will be many updates on what the province has to offer next week.

What don't we have? Malaria..............so, who cares. There is no need to go further North or South.

Mini vs Maxi Tour #2 - BUNGEEEEEEEE

I was sitting in the quiet comfort of my office this morning, when a Facebook message from Susan Wilson, organiser of the “Mini vs Maxi Tour” popped up, with the question, “HOPE YOU DON"T HAVE A FEAR OF HEIGHTS???”

Do I have a fear of heights? How do I put this delicately? It is not really the height that I am afraid of; I am terrified of the drop, especially if there is nothing restraining me from plummeting into the abyss.

My mind quickly jumped into gear and considered the possibilities. My first thought was of bungee jumping. “Ai Chihuahua,” I thought as the sweat trickled down my forehead, “do I have the stomach for that?”

Of course I can do it; my cardiologist just told me my heart is very strong.
Then Susan came to the rescue with a convenient way out, “You could always volunteer to manage the video camera capturing your team mates’ adrenaline rush.”

“Nah,” I quickly dismissed the idea. For the last twenty years or so I have been threatening to ride the big roller coaster that comes to Port Elizabeth every year. This year Sue persuaded me to put my money where my mouth is and I took the plunge – literally – proving to my family who STEADFASTLY REFUSED to join me that I am not a wimp after all.
This is an adventure challenge, so bring it on and I’ll do the plummeting, as long as that elastic band is securely attached to me.

But then I thought, it may just be abseiling down a slight incline or a gentle canopy tour in the forest – that is enough to scare many people off.
Whatever it is world, I’m ready for it.

PS: I had no sooner finished writing this when Susan well and truly committed me to my fate, “Great news - I think you then well and ready for the BUNGEEEEEE”

Mini vs Maxi Tour

I feel really privileged - and excited - to have been invited to be part of the Mini vs Maxi tour, which starts on 25 August.

The tour is brilliant initiative, launched by the Eastern Cape Parks and Tourism Agency, to promote tourism in the Eastern Cape, during Tourism Month and if it goes well it will become a regular event.

The concept is for the two teams to set off on an adventure tour to different parts of the Province, to enjoy two vastly different experiences in the Eastern Cape. I do not know what is in store for us, but I am really looking forward to the trip - not only for the sheer pleasure of touring the Eastern Cape, but being the designated driver of "the maxi" car.

We will be travelling in a VW Polo sedan, "the mini" and a VW Amarok twin cab, "the maxi" - two really superb cars. Can't wait to get behind the wheel - it will make a change from my tired old bakkie (truck. ute, van for those who are not familiar with south African speak).

Watch this space because when we start our journey I will be giving a blow by blow account of our travels and adventures.

The sea was boiling, the sky was cloudy and the wind was howling and there in the enormity of the vista is a fisherman. I pity the poor fellow, not because of the weather, but because I know what these rocks mean to fishermen. I lost many kilogrammes of lead sinkers while fishing along this shoreline. But then I remember......... I recovered the sinkers from these rocks during spring low tides and merely returned them, from whence they came. So what's new? The cycle continues.

Gone feral

The feral pigeon has gained notoriety for their total disregard for statues and they are so common we often overlook them, but they are quite attractive birds.

The Maitland River mouth is one of my favourite place's in the Port Elizabeth area, with its wide unspoilt beach. A visit here is never disappointing and last Sunday was no exception. It was a warm and sunny winter's day and when the sun started going down, we were treated to a magnificent sunset.

A group of model aircraft enthusiasts were out in full-force flying their model aircraft and gliders. A few of them can be seen flying into the sunset.

Wide open spaces

When travelling back back from Johannesburg in April we decided to take the back roads. It always makes such a pleasant change from driving along the the main highways. I just loved the wide open spaces alongside of the Gariep Dam with the muted colours and the tall grass waving in the wind.

Unfortunately there was a dirty mark on my lens so most of my pictures were spoilt and not having any programmes to clean up the marks I will have to be content with this one.

The road from Port Elizabeth to Cape Town is not called the Garden Route for nothing. At almost any time of the year there will be a profusion of flowers of one kind or another.

It is now the turn of the Ericas. Though they are blooming along the road these were taken at the van Staden's Wild Flower Reserve this weekend.

Last Saturday morning I decided to brave the winter chill and photgraph the sunrise and headed for the site of a former roadhouse called Something Good, at the beach front. There were no clouds about to give the sunrise character, but I felt that this photo more than compensated for that. This was one of my gems.

Bushbuck treat

I just love the Eastern Cape. You never know what you are going to see when you go around a bend, like coming across these bushbuck recently while driving on a country road.

These animals are usually very shy and it was nice to be able to stop and watch and photograph them at our leisure.

Africa is full of many wierd and wonderful creatures. One of my favourites is the meerkat. They are such curious animals and I enjoy the characteristic way they stand on their hind legs and survey the scenery.

But do not be fooled by the fact this is such a sweet looking little fellow - look at the fang sticking out. There is a good reason why the sign on his cage carries a warning to keep your fingers out, because he bites.

Skywatch Friday - Blushing clouds

What I like about sunrises is that they are unpredictable and you never know what delights are going to be presented to you, when you set out. The colours also change so quickly that within seconds you can quite easily miss some of the subtle nuances, painted across the sky. I am not sure what brought this on, but the other morning the clouds were blushing. It did not last long, but they were definitely embarrassed.

Take heart - there is life after a heart attack

On Tuesday morning I headed for the consulting rooms of my cardiologist, for my two yearly heart checkup with a feeling of apprehension. It has been two years since my last check up and I have not had a cholesterol test in between and I am full of uncertainty.

First thing that happens is that I have my blood pressure tested.

"Perfect," says the nurse. Some of my apprehension immediately drains away.

Next I have to remove my shirt and I am connected to the ECG, with a skimpy fishnet vest holding the cables down. I then have to walk on the treadmill until my heart rate gets to 150. The only problem is that mine won't go beyond 148 and with the extra speed and time I end up huffing and puffing like a steam engine.

I am relieved when I am allowed to stop. "Any pain or any discomfort? she asks.

"None," I gasp.

"Oh dear," the nurse informs me, "the screen has frozen." I watch as I regain my breath, while she reboots the computer and then calmly announces that the records have not been saved.

"Does that mean I'm in for seconds?" I ask.

"Yes," she replies sweetly.

"Mmmmm," I think as I get back on the treadmill, "I hope this doesn't mean they are going to charge me double."

The second time round I am firmly into my stride and I get to 150 with no problem and no huffing and puffing.

Soon I am with the big man and I have to take off my shirt so that he can listen to my heart. With that done his first question when he opens my file is, "Are you still on the bunny food?"

"Yes," I reply. I know he is checking up on me. When I went for my first check up three and a half years ago I told him I had completely changed my life style and eating habits and like any good, if somewhat cynical, cardiologist he had replied, "That is good, if you are able to sustain it." I never knew that he had written it down.

Then while impassively reading my ECG he asks, "Do you know you have an arrhythmia?"

"No," I reply, "What is an arrhythmia?"

"It's an irregular heart beat," he replies, pointing to a few blips on the ECG print out.

"What causes it and do I need to be concerned," I ask, the apprehension now being replaced with worry.

"Any number of issues," he says, "but in your case it is probably scar tissue caused from damage to the heart, after your heart attack. We need to do an ultrasound to check it out."

I am ushered into another room and again take my shirt off and I am made to lie on a bed, while the ultrasound is conducted. I am disappointed that I cannot see the screen.

After a while I am facing the big man again. He looks at the ultrasound printout and announces, like he cannot believe it, "There is no scar tissue and there is no narrowing of the arteries. In fact your heart is very strong."

He then shows me that the irregular heat beats completely disappear when I was going at full pace on the treadmill. "Does that mean I should spend my days running around at full speed," I innocently ask.

He does not get my perverse sense of humour and replies, "No, that means this arrhythmia is not a problem, but because you had a heart attack, I am going to prescribe a mild beta blocker."

"That's a relief," I say.

He looks at my cholesterol test and announces, "Excellent, it is 3.6."

I smile and now start to relax.

He concludes the consultation with some reassuring words, "I am very happy with your result and I am not in the slightest bit worried about your arrhythmia. See you in two years time."

I leave the consulting rooms on cloud 9. My fanatical eating habits have paid off. Now what I have to get more fanatical about is exercising, so let's see what I can achieve over the next two years.
