Skywatch Friday - Double rainbow

It was a wet and rainy afternoon and the inclination was to curl up in bed with a good book, but with a view like this the bed and the book could definitely wait.

Playing in the rain - or should that be painting

One of favourite photographic pastimes is jumping in the car on a stormy night and seeing what  pictures I can create through the windscreen. I was very tradition in my approach to photography but now I don't mind the blurry and indistinct, in its place. If that's what I see through the windscreen, then why not capture it - I am often surprised by the results.

This one was taken in Suffolk Street in Richmond Hill.

It was a dark and stormy night....

The view through my cars windscreen at 04h45 this morning, taken while on a neighbourhood watch patrol. I liked the way the street light caught the sheets of falling rain. The effect was enhanced with the water running off the windscreen, giving it a nice abstract effect.

Skywatch Friday - Turbulent Sky

The sky over Kleinpoort in the Karoo, looking very ominous.

Skywatch Friday - Rolling in

View across Algoa Bay with a South Westerly wind in full cry and the waves rolling in.

High Seas

The sea swell was reported to be at over five metres high, but with the South-Westerly blowing off shore onto Algoa Bay the sea was flat, but the spray from the waves was spectacular.

The New Brighton Beach pier taking a pounding, while the fishermen nonchalantly watch.

Crossing the line

It was a cold and windy night in the Bay and Suzie-K and I hit the road to find some photo opportunities. Now when it comes to photography I may be something of a perfectionist - I tend to stick to what is safe, like the good old nicely composed sharp pictures.

Well, tonight I may have broken the mold..........no tripod, dirty wind screen, hand-held camera, moving car ..........etc, etc, etc.

And I like the effect.............

I think I a going to explore this a bit more.

Skywatch Friday - Cotton clouds

On a recent road trip from Port Elizabeth to Johannesburg, we had about two hours added to the travelling time as a result of road repairs and the frequent "stop and go's". Well there was no point in getting irritated with all the waiting, when there were so many photo opportunities around, like these clouds forming over the Free State.

Skywatch Friday - Stormy weather

Thunder storms are rare in Port Elizabeth and when one hit the city a few nights ago I set up my tripod in the front yard and merrily clicked away, while the lightning flashed all around. It was mostly sheet lightning, but what a spectacular display, complete with sound effects.

I see that I have been off the blogging scene for a while now, but that is because I have been having my own flashes of inspiration and have been concentrating on writing my novel. I never realised that writing could be such fun, though it can also be frustrating when I hit a dry patch.

Don't mess with nature

Spring was certaily ushered in with a bang this year. Take a massive cold front that created swells of up to 11 metres and couple it with a spring high tide and you have a recipe for destruction.

Here are a few before and after shots, to show the awesome power of the sea.

Kings Beach on a normal day.

Kings Beach last Sunday

Waves battering the sea wall at Sidon Street, behind Stuart Graham. This is not one of my pics but one that has been doing the rounds on the internet, so I cannot give acknowledgements to the photographer.

The aftermath. The building from the top picture can be seen in the top left.

The sea wall shot about a year ago. And I thought the waves were spectacular then.

The same area as it it is now

A tranquil scene taken from one of the popular fishing spots last year.

...... and the railway line heading towards the city

In one fluid movement the sea changed all that. I do not think the trains will be running any time soon.

It just goes to show that you cannot tame the sea and that bad town planning does not pay
