Richmond Hill Sunrise

I do so love sunrises. It is a time of the day that so many people miss, but being an early riser means I get to see plenty of them. This one was taken from my front gate, as the cold front made its appearance.

Winter solstice - Richmond Hill.

Here is an example of the brilliance of the early twentieth century builders. On the 21 June every year, the rising sun is perfectly aligned between the hall at the St Phillips Church, the St Phillips Guesthouse and our front gate. And, to top it all legend has it that if a flock of crows flies over when you are watching the sunrise, you are going to have a really good year. Okay, so I made I up the second part, but no problem that's how legends are born.

My favourite lighthouse

It was early start this morning to catch the sunrise at Shark Point, Cape St Francis, but I'll save those for another time. The morning light was just perfect and really brought the lighthouse to life.

Skywatch Friday - Gone Fishin'

Getting up early to catch the sunrise over St Francis Bay is always a bonus whenever we get to stay at the Port. This day was no exception and the picture was enhanced by a boat heading out for some deep sea fishing,

Happy New Year

I cannot believe another year has come and gone, but I supppose that time waits for no one.

As is my custom I will not be making any new years resolutions, but will continue to live life to the fullest. Having said that I like the following quote from Paulo Coelho and think I will give it a try this year:

kiss slowly
laugh insanely
love truly
and......
forgive quickly

Wishing all of you out there have a truly wonderful and prosperous new year.

Skywatch Friday - The Donkin

Sunrise at the Donkin Reserve with two iconic symbols of the city. The old lighthouse and the pyramid, built by Sir Rufane Donkin in memory of late his wife Elizabeth, after whom the city is named.

This is one our favourite spots to watch the sunrise over Algoa Bay.

Sunrise over the Russel Road Cemetary looking towards Algoa Bay

For those of you who are interested in history, this is also where James Langley Dalton is buried. He was one of the survivors of the Battle of Rorkes Drift and a recipient of the Victoria Cross. Langley's character also featured in the 1964 movie Zulu.

Mini vs Maxi Tour - Day 2 Cape St Francis

My day started with an early morning walk on a rather windswept, but refreshing beach at Cape St Francis.

Skywatch Friday - Shark Rock Pier

Shark Rock Pier is probably one of the most photographed attractions in Port Elizabeth. But then it is not surprising because it is so photogenic in its many moods.

Skywatch Friday - Something Good

Last Saturday morning I decided to brave the winter chill and photgraph the sunrise and headed for the site of a former roadhouse called Something Good, at the beach front. There were no clouds about to give the sunrise character, but I felt that this photo more than compensated for that. This was one of my gems.

Skywatch Friday - Blushing clouds

What I like about sunrises is that they are unpredictable and you never know what delights are going to be presented to you, when you set out. The colours also change so quickly that within seconds you can quite easily miss some of the subtle nuances, painted across the sky. I am not sure what brought this on, but the other morning the clouds were blushing. It did not last long, but they were definitely embarrassed.
